1950s Table

September 7, 2011
Kelly found a rickety old table in a shed.  It isn't much to look at, straight lines, a simple drawer, and a top that has seen a hard life.  But we believe it is a treasure.  Lining the inside of the drawer is an old newspaper.  You can make out some of the articles...and the date is 1958.
Unfortunately, Kelly threw the newspaper aside and just brought the table home.  I hope to go back to the shed where he found it and find the newspaper.

The legs are loose and are in desperate need of being tightened up.  The bottom of the drawer is busted.  And the top has bowed in.
But looking at the top, it does seem to not be handmade.  It is made of planks of some type of hardwood, our best guess-timate is oak.  Looking closely at the planks they are not even in width, so we are assuming it was part of a larger piece of planks glued together and commercially cut into a perfect square.

We are assuming the white paint peeling off is lead based.  And at some point we believe carpet was glued to the top.

But aside from all this, Kelly and I believe we can turn this rickety old work table into something beautiful.  We don't have a concrete plan set in place for it just yet, but I'd really love to do some tile work on the top....

Kelly went back and got the newspaper that was inside the drawer.  Not much I can say, the pictures will speak for themselves.  I tried to get as many pictures of the articles I thought were interesting.  We also found two receipts dated October 1960.
